Down Town Walking Tour:

Fulton Mall: Shopping Central -

At one time there was an elevated train line running down Fulton Street. This street is the literal start of Brooklyn starting on what is now OLD Fulton Street, it was the main road of colonial Brooklyn. Swinging north up todays Candem Plazza, it then curved eastward passing in front of Boro Hall, down to todays Fulton Mall and traveling out to Beford-Styversant and Queens.

If you look at the stores and buildings along Fulton Street, including the original A&S, you'll notice a large number of windows high up from the street. The reason for this pecular design is because the elevate line blocked the light at street level. Building took advantage of the train traffic along the rail for advertising and for light.
