LAST CALL: DIR rule comment period closes tomorrow

We'll keep it short: Ending tomorrow is the comment period on provisions in CMS' proposed drug pricing rule that would eliminate the retroactive nature of pharmacy DIR fees. Already nearly 3,200 NCPA members have sent CMS comments supporting those provisions. If you are not one of those people, you have only a few more hours to become one of them.

Here's a quick primer on what the rule does and doesn't do.

And here's NCPA's quick-and-easy portal for sending your comments to CMS.

Please (please, please) comment today. Your input matters.

CE webinar: Add value with community health workers

Community health workers are recognized public health professionals in almost all 50 states and serve as a liaison between health and community services. These individuals are considered trusted members of the communities they serve. Pharmacy staff members currently employ many of the same techniques as those CHWs. Join us on Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. ET for this continuing education webinar as Tripp Logan discusses why having an actual CHW as part of your staff is valuable for your patients and business.

Op-ed touts pharmacy toolkit in fight against opioid misuse

National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations CEO Becky Snead and NCPA CEO Douglas Hoey co-authored an article in Drug Topics discussing Allied Against Opioid Abuse's Pharmacy Toolkit, which provides educational materials to help pharmacists engage in conversations with their patients and health care provider colleagues about prescription opioids and how to prevent abuse of these pain medications. They wrote that patients and their caregivers put their trust in pharmacists, especially in the fight against opioid misuse.

Good News

Palace Drug Store, in Cleveland, Okla., joined forces with Oklahoma State University's Prevention Programs, the Product Stewardship Institute, and Covanta Environmental Solutions to collect and safely destroy leftover pharmaceuticals free of charge. “This is something our pharmacy wanted to do for the community," said NCPA member Jeff Moore, owner of Palace Drug Store. "We're proud to join this partnership. Our take-back program provides a much-needed service, raises awareness, and helps keep families safe."
