Dana Hudes, an NYCC member, has been hospitalized for the last two weeks with serious head trauma after crashing on a ride. Dana was apparently riding solo and was discovered at the side of the road, unconscious, by local police. Details are limited, but the injuries are rather serious – he is in a coma at Hackensack Hospital in NJ. NYCC members, like all of the cycling community, share a bond, a purpose, a commonality that brings out the best in us. Dana, maybe more than many cyclists you'll ever meet, is a fine example of this. His sense of community reaches across all skill levels within the club, as well as stretching halfway across the world. He annually cycles on a charity ride in Israel to raise money for a wonderful children’s hospital in Jerusalem called Alyn and has built up a very close and loving relationship with the entire Alyn “family” of riders and organizers in addition to his close ties with the NYCC and other cyclists. We wish Dana the best for a rapid and complete recovery and we offer our emotional support to his wife Golda and their two daughters. (Golda gave us permission to post this.) We look forward to seeing Dana fit and well, soon. For more details, see Dana’s Facebook page. So sorry to hear about this. I've ridden with Dana, and he is really a devoted ride leader. I just want to mention that if you aren't already facebook friends with him, you can't see whatever details are on his page. I know some folks would probably like to send flowers or a card or something, so if possible, can you post more information about how he's doing and where to send? Thanks. It is a very well respected facility in NJ – actually where Christopher Reeves did his rehab years ago. The news I heard is that he was able to sit up and is slowly becoming more aware. There was a FB posting by a family friend that Dana kissed the hands of his daughters. On our annual ride Trawilways Coasting Ride with my co-leader Hannah B., a cyclist whom we met on the train and joined the ride. The person has been closely reading the Message Board these past months as s/he is an avid cyclist and has been researching NYC cycling clubs and groups to join. The person mentioned to me reading on this MB in June about a cyclist who who riding alone and was severely injured. I don't read this MB that frequently but I vaguely recalled that perhaps this was Dana Hudes. I said I didn't know and had not heard anything. How is Dana doing? We must do something, both to spread the word about another avoidable fatality on our streets, and to honor Dana's life in cycling. Looking forward to helping out in any way, Best, Alex Top
